THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(for July 24, 1993)
For whatever reason, many of us have a tendency to play
better chess in certain environments. Perhaps it is something
as simple as a more comfortable chair, a quieter playing
hall or an atmosphere unusually conducive to chess.
Even on the Grandmaster level, location seems to be a factor
in the performance of some players. Take the case of Ivan
Morovic of Chile, for example. A Grandmaster since 1986 and
one of South America's strongest players since that time,
Morovic has usually been a solid, but hardly spectacular,
performer in international tournaments--with two exceptions.
His only significant victories have come at Las Palmas in the
Canary Islands--in 1987 and about one month ago.
His win at this year's edition of Las Palmas was nothing
short of impressive. Despite his initial ranking of second
from the bottom in a FIDE Category 16 field that averaged
nearly 2630 for each of the ten GM participants, Morovic's
6-3 score (consisting of 4 wins, 4 draws and only one loss),
proved good enough for clear first.
Viswanathan Anand, the tourney's highest rated player, tied
for second, one-half point back, with Russian GM Alexander
Khalifman. Anand was the only person to not lose a game.
Michael Adams and Artur Yusupov followed at 5-4; Zurab
Azmaiparashvili had an even score of 4.5; Bulgarian GMs'
Kiril Georgiev and 18 year old Veselin Topalov tied at 4-5;
US representative Larry Christiansen finished at 3.5-5.5 and
Spanish GM Manuel Rivas Pastor, the lowest rated player at
2515, did not win a game en route to a 2-7 record.
Rarely does a Grandmaster as strong as Khalifman get beaten
as badly as he did in the following game against Anand from
the fourth round.
